How did a Texas geologist who worked at a major copper mine in Utah end up pioneering high-end copper furniture in Mexico? It all started with a road trip in 1982.
Raised in Texas, Fred spent his early years working alongside Mexican laborers on farms and ranches, where he developed not only a respect for their craftsmanship and work ethic, but also a natural feel for the Spanish language. After studying Spanish in high school and college, he set out on a summer journey through Mexico in 1982.
That trip changed everything.
Fred was drawn in by the richness of Mexican culture, the beauty of its colonial architecture, and the timeless artistry found in handcrafted furnishings. But more than anything, he was struck by the deep value placed on family and community. He made a promise to himself then: one day, he would return to Mexico with his future family and expose his kids to the rich family-oriented culture and Spanish language.
That promise became reality in 1996.
Fred and his wife Meg, an environmental engineer, left behind demanding corporate careers and moved to Mexico with their one and four-year old kids to start what would become Copper Instincts. What began as a leap of faith quickly grew into a passion-driven business grounded in craftsmanship, relationships, and purpose.
More than three decades later, Fred and Meg have built not only a successful furniture line, but a company known for its quality, integrity, and enduring partnerships with both clients and artisans. And they raised their kids in Mexico to be bi-cultural and totally bi-lingual. While there were many challenges along the way, they have no regrets and no plans to leave Mexico.
